Twenty bands from as far as Panama and Japan and as near as hometown Pasadena participated in this year’s Rose Parade with the theme “Dreams Come True.” Other musical acts included KC and the Sunshine Band, Tessanne Chin—the newest winner from “The Voice”—Natalie Cole and Darryl Hall as they entertained audiences from various parade floats. A majority of the marching bands also performed at the Bandfest field shows.

It was a battle of the rock and roll shows between the Spartan Marching Band from Michigan State University and the Leland Stanford Junior University Marching Band from Stanford University. Michigan State played selections including “Paradise City” by Guns N’ Roses and “You Really Got Me” by The Kinks while Stanford interspersed controversial commentary with songs such as “What Is Hip?” from Tower of Power and “Come Out and Play (Keep ‘Em Separated)” by The Offspring. In the end, the Michigan State football team—which hadn’t made it to the Rose Bowl in 25 years—declared victory with a score of 24-20.
