Get your band out of your garage and out performing. “So, You Have a Band,” a book written by Denver-based musician and journalist Tim Wenger, will give you all the steps you need to succeed.
Featuring the tagline, “An Insider’s Guide to Developing, Growing, and Presenting Your Band as a Serious Business,” Wenger’s book gives advice to budding professional musicians based on his own experiences in the music industry.
“In my early twenties, [our band] had no one guiding us, … and we learned a lot by making mistakes,” Wenger said in his October 2016 press release. “Over the last decade, I’ve been fortunate enough not only to interact with many musicians that shared their insight but have also worked in the media and in a club, seeing how the industry works on the inside.”
This book goes beyond the musical and into the logistical as Wenger walks the reader through the steps of turning a band into a business, including the process of forming an S Corporation or a Limited Liability Corporation. Wenger also gives advice on marketing your band, finding performance opportunities, and even knowing when to turn down a gig.
To further aid musicians with the nitty-gritty aspects of setting themselves up as a business, the book includes samples of documents like press releases, inter-band agreements, and band-to-promoter interactions.
